What is an Irrigation Suitability Test?

When submitting a water sample to a laboratory for evaluation, request an “Irrigation Suitability Test”.

The test results obtained from this testing procedure will give you all of the important information needed to evaluate your water as to how it affects the soil and turf. This is very important. Other testing methods leave out critical information that is needed to properly evaluate the water. Below is a list of information that you should receive on an Irrigation Suitability Test report.

  • Water pH
  • Total hardness
  • Bicarbonate level in ppm
  • Carbonate level in ppm
  • Electrical Conductivity (EC) expressed in mmhos/cm
  • Total Soluble Salts in ppm
  • Analysis of nutrients expressed in ppm including:
    • Nitrate, Phosphate, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sulfate, Manganese, Iron, & Boron.
  • Cation/Anion levels expressed in meq/liter to include:
    • Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Sulfate, Bicarbonate, & Carbonate.
  • Sodium Absorption Ratio
  • Sodium Absorption Ratio-Adjusted
